According to Belmont photographer and writer Jeanne Widmer who based a photo exhibit on the theater, it was originally known as the Strand Theater which opened on Sept. Studio Cinema has been a fixture in Belmont for nearly 100 years. Helsing said there is work to be done on the building such as fixing the roof which is leaking, adding a fire alarm system and replacing the HVAC. We know it's disappointing because it will cease to exist as they knew it, but maybe they could come join us for another event, maybe an art exhibit or a free movie one day or maybe even come to the church to check it out some time," he said. "We have been a church deeply invested in the community. Helsing said he understands the transition is disappointing to neighbors and he empathizes with them. Obviously we will have to find a new home when it makes sense to return to theaters," she said. We are so very grateful to him for willing to give us our start. "Of course, we are disappointed about the loss of this nearly 100 year old, classic-style movie theater and that we will no longer be working with Jim, who has been so generous to Belmont World Film these past 19 years.
However, once the pandemic is over, he hopes to offer free movies once a month and also would like to offer the lobby of the former Studio Cinema to local artists for exhibits.Įllen Gitelman, executive director of Belmont World Film which held its annual festivals at Studio Cinema expressed her feelings about the news of the sale.
Helsing said it will no longer be a movie theater. In addition to Studio Cinema, Beacon Community Church also now owns the property rented by Lisa's Pizzeria (368 Trapelo Road) and Spoodles Soup Factory (374 Trapelo Road).
